HUI-YI LEE

​         Hui-Yi is an Assistant Professor of Horn in the Department of Music at National University of Tainan. From 2018 to 2023, she served as Principal Horn of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea.

        Born in Taipei, Hui-Yi began piano studies at the age of four and later transitioned to horn performance. She received her early musical training through Taiwan’s specialized music education system and earned her Bachelor of Music degree from the Department of Music at National Taiwan Normal University, where she was admitted as the top-ranked brass student and studied with Professor Szu-Yuan Chuang.

         Hui-Yi pursued graduate studies in the United States, earning a Master of Music degree from Boston University in 2013, followed by a Graduate Diploma in Performance from the New England Conservatory. She completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Boston University in May 2021, studying with Eric Ruske. During this period, she also received extensive orchestral training with James Sommerville, Principal Horn of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

         An active orchestral musician, Hui-Yi has participated in major international music festivals, including the Verbier Festival Orchestra (2016–2018), where she served as Principal Horn under the direction of Charles Dutoit and performed Richard Strauss’s Salome. She was also selected for Spoleto Festival USA (2016, 2017) and was a full-scholarship fellow at the Aspen Music Festival (2014, 2015), studying with John Zirbel, Andrew Bain, and David Wakefield.

         During her tenure with the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Hui-Yi appeared as soloist in Mozart’s Horn Concerto (2021) and presented a Principal Horn Recital (2022). Since returning to Taiwan, she has maintained an active international performance career, collaborating with ensembles such as the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra Taiwan, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra, and Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra. She has also served frequently as Guest Principal Horn with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and other leading orchestras in Asia.

         In 2024, Hui-Yi toured with the KBS Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Pietari Inkinen as part of the 20th International Chopin and His Europe concert series. In 2025, she co-founded New England Winds, a woodwind quintet formed by alumni of the New England Conservatory, and Pangea Brass Quintet, an international brass ensemble that has toured in Spain. Her work reflects a strong commitment to performance excellence, pedagogy, and cross-cultural artistic collaboration.
